Dental technicians support dentists by making a range of dental prostheses and repairing and constructing dental appliances.

Where dental technicians are employed

Dental technicians work in dental laboratories on their own or in small groups. They work closely with dentists and dental prosthetists and usually have no direct contact with patients.


Full-time dental technicians in South Australia generally earn between $1,000 and $1,299 per week.

Job prospects

In 2011 there were 187 people employed full-time as dental technicians compared with 172 in 2006.

How to become one

To become a dental technician you are required to complete a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification in dental technology. You can also become a dental technician through an apprenticeship or traineeship in dental technology. Licensing or registration requirements

There are currently no licensing or registration requirements for dental technicians.

Many employers will require a minimum of a certificate III education level.

If you have overseas gained qualifications or work experience as a dental technicians, or related occupation you can approach a registered training provider for information about Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to an Australian qualification level.
