Solutions to address skills shortages in South Australia

The South Australian Government has invested $8.8m over 4 years to develop solutions to skills shortages and open new opportunities to connect South Australians to training and future jobs.

Solutions in action

In 2022-23, 8 projects were awarded to tackle current and emerging skills shortages in key sectors including defence trades, cookery, bricklaying and concreting.

The Women in Civil project is an example of a solution that sought to remove barriers and open opportunities to women entering the civil construction industry. Watch their story.

2022-23 Skill Shortage Solutions

Brick and blocklaying

An Industry Engagement Officer will promote and champion bricklaying as a career of choice and support employers and learners across the industry.

Commercial cookery

Job seekers will be immersed in commercial cookery environments and complete an introductory skill set before starting an apprenticeship.

Concreting

Industry will support the design and development of contemporary course materials for Certificate III in Concreting to increase access for students.

Delivered by TAFE SA.

Electrician

A mobile electrical training unit will deliver innovative and practical training and assessment to electrical apprentices and learners in regional areas.

Delivered by PEER.

Electrician (dual trade)

The dual trade apprenticeship in Certificate III in Electrotechnology (Electrician) and Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration will be digitised to support contemporary delivery to regional learners.

Heavy industry

Job seekers in the Upper Spencer Gulf will complete a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation and basic welding training to help them transition to jobs in the mining and resources sector.

Women in civil

Women interested in civil careers will complete an introduction to concreting skill set and be supported into civil construction roles.

Women in construction

A marketing campaign will help women to consider and connect with careers in the construction industry.
